This December, Christie’s London branch was the site of two once-in-a-lifetime auctions of unique artworks by master artists from the Baroque era. Several prints by Rembrandt set new auction records.
The second of three scheduled auctions of the Sam Josefowitz collection, which experts agree is one of the most exceptional private collections of Rembrandt’s graphic works, was held in London on December 5th. It’s no surprise then that five auction records were broken on that day. The print entitled “The Three Crosses” was sold for the highest amount, an astounding £1,250,000.
The second part of the collection brought in £5,554,664, a successful follow-up of last year’s auction, which totalled £7,916,130. Christie’s will present the third part of the collection in December 2025.
Baroque master Anthony van Dyck’s painting, “Andalusian Horse” was sold for well above the highest pre-auction estimate. During the restoration process, an oil painting of a landscape was discovered on the other side. The work’s final auction price was £3,428,000.
